Give Blood!

Did you know…

🩸 Every 2 seconds in the US someone needs blood - for surgeries, #cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries

🩸90,000-100,000 people in the US are affected by #sicklecelldisease; 1,000 babies are born with it each year - Sickle cell patients can require blood transfusions throughout their lives

🩸1 car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood

🩸Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured - they can only come from volunteer donors

🩸1 donation can help save more than 1 life

Being a leader of a philanthropic board requires that I am steeped in understanding the organization’s mission, one that literally saves lives every minute. Until I joined the board of the Red Cross of our Nation’s Capital, I was blissfully unaware of the dire state of blood donations in our country. Simply put, we don’t have enough. COVID-19 greatly limited the supply, creating not only increased demand but also backlog.

Before we get down to business on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region, we donate.  I’m proud to say that for the greater good, I have put aside my fear of needles and embraced the fact that for 20 minutes I can lay back, read, and enjoy a juicebox knowing that I’m doing my part to help a critical national need.
